Old-Growth Trek: Elders Grove to Todd Mountain
Explore one of Massachusetts’ rarest ecosystems: old-growth forest left undisturbed and in its original, natural state. Three separate hikes with three different challenge levels. Visit the last forests that remain truly undisturbed by humankind. A knowledgeable guide helps you appreciate these unique living communities more deeply. This hike has two destinations: One short and easy, one longer and difficult. Join us for the easy hike to the Elders Grove, home of the tallest trees in New England. If you choose, continue on to summit Todd Mountain on a trail that ascends 787 feet in one mile. At the top: a view of the Berkshire Hills, and one of the largest old-growth forests in the state. 6 miles and 3 hours round-trip, with 930 feet elevation gain. Or allow 1 hour to the Elders Grove and back. Meet at Zoar Picnic Area, Zoar Road, Charlemont, MA. Hikers must bring ample water and sturdy shoes, a snack, bug spray, and hiking poles if needed. All hikes leave the trailhead at 1:10 pm sharp.
